TITLE:Live8

July 03, 2005

A few thoughts:
1. The supporters of Live8 claim that the people at all the concerts were out there to support the cause. I disagree, I would guess that over 80% of them were there for the concert. The shows were free after all. I find it odd I can find no pictures from the "One Rally" held in Philadelphia earlier that day.
2. I am all for improving Africa. Why do we focus on Africa though and not the enormous amount of other places with poverty? Getting rid of poverty in Africa will take many more years, but then what about the other nations with poverty. Even those in the G8 have poverty, how will we also end poverty there?
3. Some of the People marching in Scotland to get the G8 to provide more help to Africa were carrying Bush signs. Why? Perhaps these people should be attempting to get their own governments to donate more. No other country has donated more to Africa than the United States and it has only increased since Bush has taken office.
4. I think it is great that Tony Blair and President Bush both forgave about $40 Billion in debt that Africa owed. Bush also said Aid to Africa would be doubled in 5 years. All of this and we are in the largest National Deficit in years and yet we are still seen as the greediest country.
5. Make Trade Fair. The ONE Campaign. Support them.

I think it is mad retarded that they couldnt charge a dollar or two and actually make money to donate instead of lame "Awareness".....they had an awesome opportunity and they screwed it up.

That is a good point. I mean if there were million there worldwide, that was millions to be made. Instead they would rather point fingers, maybe they should see the 3 pointing back at them.

BTW, word is the G8 reps don't even care :P

I certainly agree that most people present at the concert probably didn't give a rip about Africa. Did they bother to take a donation to support the cause, or anything?

My general feeling is that we can always do more to support those in need, but expecting government to do it all while we drive home in our BMW's to the rich suburbs where we live in the lap of luxary seems extremely hypocritical. The finger points back at me as well. Great post!
